Description

NGC4284 is a highly inclined spiral galaxy of type Sbc with a small, bright core and two bright, narrow spiral arms expanding into a broader spiral structure.
NGC4290 is a barred spiral galaxy of type SB(rs)ab with a bright, elongated core attached to a bright bar, itself attached to a pseuda ring especially bright where it meets the bar. The ring is surrounded by a broad, faint outer enveloppe, which has many knotty condensations.
NGC4284 and NGC4290 form a close pair but it is unlikely that the two galaxies are physically related.  Their radial velocities are respectively 4298 km/s and 3127 km/s,  corresponding to distances of 192 mly. and 140 mly. Angular diameters 2.6'x1.6' for NGC4284 and 2.3'x1.7' for NGC4290.
Another faint edge-on galaxy is visible 3.75' east of NGC4290.
